Not advertising your open house is just like having a party and not inviting anyone. Why bother? Pull out a calendar and SCHEDULE your open houses. PLAN for them. And, most important of all, ADVERTISE them! Make sure when you advertise, you also add directions that are easy to follow - (not everyone has a GPS).
Advertise a drawing for a free Flip video camera. You can find them on Amazon now for about $50. After 4 or so open houses, draw a name and make a big deal announcing the winner - advertise that too. Make sure to order a custom skin for the Flip camera with your branding on it (skinit.com) so everyone knows where it came from! I've attached a picture of Dakno's custom skin.

Running an open house without advertising IS a waste of time. Despite all this technology we still get folks looking in the newpapers for OH ads. This is a great list, Tina. Thanks.

I like the idea of holding a drawing for a Flip, or some other item, as a door prize for attending your open house. The other idea of placing a skin on it to keep your name in front of people is another good idea.

Great post. We get more and more people to open houses from Trulia around here - from other places - not so much. Love the skin. ~Rita
We find experimenting on what using different ways to advertise an open houses accomplishes shows attendance using only Craig's List nearly equals turnout from newspaper ads.
The custom gift / Prize is a terrific idea...and the basic thought about advertising calls into question how many agents run open houses out of boredom or seller necessity. If your not going to make a big deal out of it don't bother.
